The Capability Crisis™

We are living through an extraordinary period of technological change.

Artificial intelligence can generate information, analyse data, solve problems and create knowledge at a speed that would have been unimaginable only a few years ago.

But that raises a much bigger question.

As technology becomes more capable, are we?

For generations, we have invested heavily in education, knowledge and qualifications.

Yet knowledge and capability are not the same thing.

Knowledge tells us what to know.

Capability determines what we can do.

Capability is developed through experience, responsibility, challenge, practice and reflection.

It is demonstrated in our ability to exercise judgement, take initiative, solve problems, communicate, work with others and be relied upon when it matters.

And capability matters everywhere.

It matters in families and schools.

It matters in the workplace.

It matters in leadership and business.

And ultimately, it matters in the institutions and communities upon which society depends.

When capability grows, confidence grows with it.

People become better equipped to take responsibility for themselves and others.

Teams become more effective.

Businesses become more resilient.

Communities become stronger.

When capability declines, the opposite happens.

Dependence grows.
Confidence falls.
Initiative disappears.
Institutions weaken.

That is The Capability Crisis™.

AI hasn’t created it.

AI has exposed it.

As machines become increasingly capable of providing the knowledge, information and technical expertise we once valued so highly, our distinctly human capabilities become more important, not less.

Perhaps, therefore, the defining question of the twenty-first century isn’t simply:

How intelligent can we make our technology?

It is:

How capable can we make ourselves?

Technology will continue to change what is possible.

Human capability will determine what we do with those possibilities.
